A New Divan – Festival of Music and Poetry at the Barenboim-Said Akademie, Berlin

From 18-20 November 2019, the Barenboim-Said Akademie and Gingko celebrated the 200th anniversary of the publication of the West–östlicher Divan with three days of music, literature and art, culminating in the launch of A New Divan, a volume of newly commissioned poetry published by Gingko in English and Suhrkamp in German.

The opening keynote was delivered by Stefan Weidner on the subject of “The Oriental Question: An attempt to reconcile Goethe and Edward Said”. Click here to read the English translation of this keynote.

In 1819, the great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published his West-Eastern Divan, a celebration through poetry of friendship between ‘East’ and ‘West’. 200 years later, the world has radically moved on, but the need for a renewed initiative for dialogue and friendship between cultures has never been greater. With this in mind, Gingko has published a new, annotated translation of the original West-Eastern Divan, but also A New Divan - a new, multilingual poetry anthology for our times.
