Suleika Speaks, Paul Farley

This poem is the English version by Paul Farley of an original poem written for “A New Divan” by the Austrian poet Raoul Schrott. The original poem was inspired by the book of Suleika in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “West-Eastern Divan” (published 1819).

In 1819, the great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published his West-Eastern Divan, a celebration through poetry of friendship between ‘East’ and ‘West’. 200 years later, the world has radically moved on, but the need for a renewed initiative for dialogue and friendship between cultures has never been greater. With this in mind, Gingko has published a new, annotated translation of the original West-Eastern Divan, but also A New Divan - a new, multilingual poetry anthology for our times.
